The Fracking Divide: Who Will Prevail in N.Y.?
Updated: 2011-10-31 11:57:00
New York Times: A Quinnipiac University poll released last week found residents of New York State almost evenly split on drilling, with 44 in favor because of economic benefits and 43 percent opposed because of environmental concerns. That represents a modest trend toward skepticism. In August, the poll found 47 percent to 42 percent in favor.
But polls, some more scientific than others, in many of the areas most likely to see gas drilling tend to show overwhelming opposition of two-thirds or more, particularly...
Guardian: The world's seven billionth baby has been born in a packed government-run hospital in the Philippines.
Weighing 2.5kg (5.5lb), Danica May Camacho was chosen by the United Nations to be one of several children around the world who will symbolically represent the global population milestone.
She was delivered just before midnight on Sunday amid an explosion of press camera flashes at Manila's Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital.
"She looks so lovely," her mother, Camille Dalura, whispered softly...
CIFOR: A team of scientists linked to the Center for International Forestry Research has released an analysis of the Indonesian government’s two-year ban on new forestry concessions.
The announcement in May of the moratorium was greeted with dismay by elements of the business community who expressed fears that a curtailment of economic growth would result from the moratorium’s limitations on forest-based development opportunities. Meanwhile, environmentalists were disappointed by the narrow scope of...

New York Times: The absence of elected New York City officials and major environmental groups from the debate over a proposed natural gas pipeline has been rather conspicuous.
As I write in Thursday`s Times, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s administration supports the natural gas project, which would run from New Jersey to the West Village in Manhattan, as a way of weaning the city’s buildings from highly polluting heating oils.
In a metropolis that often fails to meet federal air quality standards, city officials...
Mongabay: New Zealand's log exports to China are surging, reports the Wood Resource Quarterly. Log exports from New Zealand in 2011 are running 25 percent of last year's rate and are expected to hit a record. Total log exports may reach 13 million cubic meters, which would represent a doubling over 2008. One third of New Zealand' total timber harvest went to China in the form of raw logs.
New York Times: A protest against fracking at the Legislative Office Building in Albany.
In a sign that New York State may have to slow down a bit before authorizing a new kind of natural gas drilling, an advisory panel is delaying its recommendations on how the state should pay for new staff members to enforce regulations on the drilling operations.
The panel’s report had been due next Tuesday. But members say that state agencies like the health and transportation departments are having a tough time coming...

New York Times: The amount of carbon dioxide being released from streams, rivers and lakes is probably being undercounted by scientists modeling the earth`s carbon budget, a new study suggests.
The carbon dioxide emitted by inland waterways has only recently been included in assessments of global emissions over all. To date, it has mostly been measured in the form of carbon transfer from freshwater bodies to oceans.
But after looking at water chemistry data from 4,000 inland waterways, the study`s authors,...
New Scientist: How much energy does the internet use? It's hard to know where to start. There's the electricity consumed by the world's laptops, desktops and smart phones. Servers, routers and other networking equipment suck up more power. The energy required to manufacture these machines also needs to be included. Yet no one knows how many internet-enabled devices are out there, nor how long they are used before being replaced.
That hasn't stopped Justin Ma and Barath Raghavan from trying to answer the question....
New York Times: IN recent years, wind and solar power have been among the fastest-growing sources of energy in the country.
But questions loom over their future: Will federal incentives that are important to their growth continue? And what happens if those incentives expire?
For wind power, the situation is especially precarious, energy specialists say. The federal production tax credit, which has provided incentives for wind farm operators to produce power since 1992, expires at the end of 2012. Congress...
New York Times: The world’s first power plant capable of generating solar energy 24 hours a day without interruption was formally inaugurated in Spain this month by Torresol Energy, a joint venture of Masdar, the Abu Dhabi government-backed renewable energy company, and Sener, a Spanish construction and engineering firm. “Our country is contributing our strengths and expertise as an energy exporter,” Sultan Ahmed al-Jaber, Masdar’s chief executive, told an inaugural ceremony Oct. 4. “Through Masdar, we are working...

America has traditionally been seen as lagging behind in the renewable energy race. European and Asian markets have consistently outstripped the US when it comes to alternative energy. Western Europe has had stricter regulation towards efficiency standards and renewable resources than the US for years, and China is proving to be a solar powerhouse, seeing [...]
